The jobs you lose by not answering
You were working. They were deciding. Those two things happened at the same time.
The hardest part of running a one person service business is that the work and the enquiries arrive through the same hour of the day. You cannot answer the phone with your hands inside somebody's boiler, and the person ringing does not know that.
of UK adults said they would abandon a call to a business within 60 seconds and contact a competitor instead. Nearly a fifth would wait less than 30 seconds. Only 6% would leave a voicemail rather than wait.
Answer4u/YouGov, June 2026, 2,046 UK adults. Press release. The research was commissioned by a telephone answering service, so read it with that in mind, though the fieldwork is YouGov's.The six percent figure is the one that should sting. Voicemail is not a safety net. Most people simply hang up and try the next name.
What actually helps
- Give them a second way in that does not need you free. A WhatsApp or text option on your site and your Google listing catches the people who will not wait and will not leave a message.
- Reply with a holding message, not a full answer. "Got your message, I'm on a job until four, I'll ring you after that" keeps the enquiry alive. It takes eight seconds between jobs.
- Set a voicemail greeting that tells them what to do. Not "please leave a message after the tone". Say your name, say you are working, and say to text instead because you will see it sooner.
- Pick two times a day to clear messages. Lunch and the end of the day. Trying to answer continuously while working is how you end up doing neither well.
- Write down every enquiry the moment it arrives. The ones that get lost are almost never the ones you declined. They are the ones you meant to come back to.
The quote is part of the answer
Answering quickly only helps if the next step follows. An enquiry that gets a fast reply and then goes quiet for four days is worse than one you never answered, because you spent the goodwill and got nothing.
Speed of reply is the first evidence a customer has about how you will handle the actual job.
Which is the real reason it matters. Nobody can tell from the outside whether you are good at plastering. They can tell, immediately and accurately, whether you reply to people. Most will assume the two go together, and most of the time they will be right.
A sensible target
Not instant. Just predictable: every enquiry gets some form of reply the same working day, and every quote lands within two. Say it on your website, then hold to it. It is a standard most of your competition will not meet, and it costs nothing but the discipline.
